Alio Restaurant
Go hungry to this place to feast on what are generous portions for a bistro. No complaints here! Homebaked foccacia with rosemary and Barossa olive oil are worth going for alone. Perfect paté, pork belly or a genius gnocci plus lemon tart with fruit compote. The cosy Surry Hills bistro gem celebrates 10 years of stellar service this year. Snag a table for one of their good value degustations to help celebrate.
We bought a couple of scoopon vouchers for the cooking class with head chef Ashley and it was great would definitely recommend it.
As part of the cooking class we received an offer to do the degustation for $60 instead of the normal $90. Matched wines were an additional $35. We ended up booking in with a large group of friends and had a great night. I think the restaurant might have been short staffed on the night, but they handled it well. Food was great and our waitress Francesca was lovely.
Thanks for a great night!
I had the 10 course degustation menu and was extremely dissapointed. Not only does the first meal that comes out count for 3 but everything tasted so bland and the presentation of the food was plain (the risotto looked more like something that had been vommited up). The service was good which made up for the dull atmosphere, but we still had to ask for a wine cooler (which should be standard when you order a bottle of wine).
I expected alot more from the venue.
Food was beautiful but there was a lack of communication between the booking to when we arrived , no one really greeted us and the waited didnt introduce himself to say he would be looking after us.He told us special which i didnt hear at all . I dont know if they were under staffed this night or they were having trouble working in little light as it was earth hour at the time , but the service was not great .
Lack of communication led to probems as we just wanted to eat a la carte not degustation . Its a shame as the food was very nice . $30-40 a main . Nice wine not many per glass though to choose from . And charged for having a cake $5 per person .
Umm great food , but other elements were lacking . Shame nice venue and location
Chef Ashley Hughes has really opened my eyes to quality Italian cooking. A friend and went to Alio for dinner on a Monday night and decided to experience the degustation menu.
The service was impeccable- our waitress Tracey was highly knowledgable and made us feel welcome form the moments we were seated. Warm red walls and candlelights make this establishment perfect for a slow cosy meal.
Warm olives in an olive oil, rosemary and chilli dressing were quickly devoured, this was followed by a focaccia-like bread with more olive oil. Restraint was needed to ensure we had enough rooms for the degustation ...read more
I went to Alio again and tried their new degustation menu (which I realised chages every month)- it was amazing... Highlights included the baked Camembert cheese fondant with cranberries, the beautifully presented antipasto plate with an assortment of soft preserved meats accompanied with tangy olives and a soft cloud of mozarella cheese with vinegar. The Gnocchi was cooked to perfectation again and my friend also ageed- this was the best gnocchi he has ever had. The service was exceptional- we were tended to by a few different waiters- each as knowledgable and attentive as the other.
PLUS- I also took my own advice and called beforehand to find out how to get to the Parking- the secret my friend is to turn off Clevelend into Matterson ...read more
