I've really been enjoying the Sunday afternoon live music here lately, usually kicking off at around 2pm, recently I've heard singers with nothing more than an acoustic guitar, and that's a good thing as who needs heavily amplified music whilst trying to talk to friends and enjoy a meal and wine. The outdoor terrace is delightful, shade under a vergola (? Pergola brand) if you want, plus a combo of tables and chairs and higher bars and stools. I had a crisp white wine from Mudgee, unforgettable, as was my fresh fish lunch !
In a way this was a really nice pub, but for some reason I simply didn't feel that it goes much further beyond that. They have this really nice terrace which makes up a large part of the pub, which is where people indulge in their meals, and the bar is really nice, however the pub seems to cater mainly for the residents of the area, and if you know anything about North Sydney you probably have a pretty good idea of the type of people that live here. This certainly isn't one of those places that I would overtly object to visiting, however it is unlikely that I would go out of my way to visit it again. I probably should mention that it is in an incredibly leafy part of Sydney, with does add to the atmosphere, however it simply feels a little to classy for my tastes (I tend to prefer trendier pubs, or dive bars).
Love this historic but nicely updated pub. The name reminds you that you are in an area close to the water, and although the there's no water view from the pub, there is a charming village atmosphere in McMahons Point, hard to believe that the sky scrapers of North Sydney are only about two blocks away, up the hill.
The space is stylish and the food and drinks are up to the minute, so it seems the management has the right ideas about keeping up with food and drink trends. There's a train stop just up the hill, and buses also on Pacific Hwy... At night, if you do drive there, you can get a spot on one of the residential streets. Recommended.
