The kidneys can be affected or damaged by various diseases. Age increases the risk of problems including inflammation or swelling of the kidneys, diabetes, urinary tract infections, urinary incontinence and renovascular disease. Kidney problems can also increase the risk of other conditions such as cardiovascular disease.
Kidney disease is generally silent in nature unless very advanced or quickly deteriorating. So most people are symptom free or have minimal symptoms. As a result early detection is not possible unless blood tests are done regularly especially those who are at risk of it (people with high blood pressure, diabetes, ischaemic heart disease, etc.). Less than 10% of people with kidney disease know they have it. The World Kidney Day is one of the strategies to raise the awareness. Please educate your friends, colleagues, etc. about the kidney health.
