There is a small group in our social circle who are real horsey people. My fiance herself owned and competitively jumped a horse in Perth for several years, another friend owns a part Arab mare with whom she performs dressage and another jumps a Morgan mare who she owns. I myself just love the horses, love being around them and having the odd ride but I have never competed or owned a horse of my own. It's on my bucket list though.
With the money the other have invested in their horses they don't take them trail riding, instead we head to places like Glenworth Valley Horse Riding and hire some lovely, hardy tough as nails horses from there and head out. The girls have done a couple of un guided rides from there and of course bring all their own riding gear.
