The advice of Lismore locals saw us visit Mumtaj Indian Restaurant for lunch, on what turned out to be a baking hot day. Looking almost as limp as we would have if we actually were in Mumbai, we stagger in and pull up at a table directly under the closest air conditioning outlet.

The bad reviews for this restaurant are shocking to me as I go to this restaurant at least once a month. Definitely the best Indian in Lismore, the owners are Indian and cook beautiful traditional food. They are lovely people and the flavours in the food are amazing. Best butter chicken I've ever had. It's worth checking out for yourself!
it saddens me the reviews this restaurant is getting. me and my partner eat here at least once a month and we never have anything negative to say about the food, no watery curries or flavorless nann breads. although the restaurant itself needs a face-lift and the management need a little knowledge about marketing their product to draw in customers.
I really wanted this to be a good experience, but it was woeful. The truth is that these friendly folk have drifted too many degrees away from their culinary heritage and have no idea of who their customers should be. So they serve watery flavourless curries, sides are forgettable, the naan is stiff and the rice is hum drum. The people who own the place seem like nice enough people, but they simply have no idea of how to pitch an Indian restaurant like this in Lismore. The majority of people I know would value having access to good quality reasonably priced Indian. Instead most locals in search of Indian cuisine would be more likely to head to our local markets as the quality of Indian food on offer is considerably higher.
