Jack Ruby
Bar + Diner + Live Music JointNamed after the nightclub owner of the 1950's, notorious for the murder of Lee Harvey Oswald, with possible underworld connections. This newly renovated basement bar on King William St, located in Downtown Adelaide, has a touch of Americana, and more than a touch of underground cool.
This place is sort of new, though in a way it is just a renamed Bull and Bear tavern (though I'm not sure when it was renamed it must have been after I left Adelaide). I remember coming here a couple of times it was nice because it was one of those cool basement bars. Well, it still is a cool basement bar, and in a way it is just, as I mentioned, the Bull and Bear renamed and rebranded. When I came down here to check it out recently I discovered that it had become a craft-beer bar, and I have to say it is not cheap. I ended up paying $12.00 for a pot (schooner in South Australia). Actually, they called it a schmiddy, which I made mention that it was so New South Wales (they call them middy's in New South Wales, but a schmiddy is halfway between a Schooner and a Middy). You certainly get a decent range of beers here, but as I said, it isn't cheap. As for the atmosphere, it's still pretty cool, though it's probably not one of those places I'd regularly visit due to it being pretty pricey.
I owed my best friend a dinner for helping me out one day and her pick was for burgers. As she had never been to Jack Ruby's before I decided to take her their to have their yummy sliders! Yay, Jack's didn't disappoint one bit this time. We were actually so full already after indulging on our entree's, that we both were only able to down one slider! The staff happily packed our two remaining sliders each in a container for us to take home and I happily had that for a snack around midnight! ;)
A bit off game the last time I went here two weeks ago. The sliders weren't that great and I found the chorizo in the chorizo slider was burnt, didn't enjoy it much as I usually do. Also decided to finally order a dessert this time by skipping an entree but the dessert I wanted (Red velvet waffle) wasn't available :( sigh... Next time hopefully...
