Kakadu boasts a small award-winning safari called Animal Tracks that is highly recommended for independent travellers wanting to experience the real taste of Kakadu. It is an afternoon safari, departing Cooinda at 1pm and returning around 8.15pm. It operates daily from May to October with a non-aboriginal and a real bush aboriginal guide. It combines wildlife and traditional aboriginal experiences in an exclusive and personal environment. It is viewed as the role model for wilderness and indigenous tourism in the Top End. The tour is non-commercialised, earthy, hands-on and very interactive. Extensive environmental and cultural interpretation is given by both guides. Activities may include bush food gathering, story telling, bush medicines, bush crafts and food tastings. It culminates in a bushfood campfire cook-up Aboriginal-style at sunset that incorporates food gathered on the tour. The tour has exclusive access to the Kakadu Buffalo Reserve and the amazing bird gathering at Ginjala wetlands (only during the mid-Dry season). To drive the NT is great but a day on an Animal Tracks safari will enable you to continue your trip with eyes much wider open as you learn to read the bush like an aboriginal.
