Lorne Hotel
Lorne is truly one of the jewels of the Great Ocean Road. Nestled in a protected cove, it is enveloped by bush with a wealth of walking tracks and waterfalls to explore. Enjoy a walk along the promenade, experience the outdoor restaurants and cafes, or just stroll along the beach front and enjoy unique boutique shops and the Art Gallery. The Lorne Hotel also provides an excellent restaurant, sun deck beer garden which boasts spectacular views across the bay or enjoy a drink at the famous Bottom Bar with its friendly atmosphere and live entertainment.
Well, I can only go by my one experience down here, which was late one night while I was taking the sceanic route back to Adelaide. After booking into a motel I decided to go and look for a place to have a meal, and sure enough I found this place. The Olympics were on at the time (and I was cheering on Kazakstan because Australia was doing quite badly) so I spent some time in the front bar with a beer. I also had a meal at the restaurant and I must say I certainly have had a lot better. They do have a nice beer garden out the front with a pleasant view of the foreshore though. However, since passing through here again I noticed that there was another pub further on that suggested that this place was simply the 'local's bar' with nothing fancy added.
A rather ordinay pub in a nice seaside town
After driving down what is probably one of the more boring stretches of the Great Ocean Road I arrived, rather thirsty, at the town of Lorne, and immediately discovered this rather large pub on the foreshore. Deciding that I needed a bit of a rest from driving I pulled over and popped in for a quick drink. Being a rather wet winter's day (which is not the best of days for a seaside trip) I was confined to the inside of the pub.
I must say that this pub did not strike me as anything fantastic, but then again it was during the low season which meant that there were only a handful of people inside. On the outside the pub itself looked impressive, but inside I had a lot of difficulty trying to find somewhere comfortable to sit (I like couches, of which there were none, or very few, in this pub). I'll probably come back the next time I make my way down here though.
