Do those beautiful eyes for Mum to see
Mama wants to know where you are
Eating in is her favourite treat
Im always ones to push buttons so every year I try it out. Lets EAT OUT for your birthday Mum! The usual glare, a tiny smirk, and shes off, reciting what shell be cooking for that family meal.
Eating IN is her favourite treat.
Like many Vietnamese refugees, my parents and relatives began in the rag trade working 16-hour days in the garage to make ends meet. Mum was skillful and fast, but her magic has and always will be in the kitchen. Whether shes feeding V.I.P (us!),those unexpected but frequent drop-ins, or The Village (our relatives), mum always exceeds expectations, both in flavour and quantity!
What she created with the little we had was amazing! And while money didnt grow on trees, mum could grow just about everything else. The BÃ?E (a large grapefruit species) is a mainstay of her garden and our family table, and half the reason for the name Mamai.
The other reason is pretty obvious. Not in the negative sense, but a jovial confession of my admiration and gratitude.
The Mamas BÃ?E menu is inspired by both my Mum and close aunts (ThaÂm) home-cooked goodness. Our best memories are centered around family meals and the banter that echoed from them. Were happiest when everyone is enjoying great food in great company.
So make yourself at home (respectfully!) and make some memories. Just do as mum says:
Eat, enjoy, and never leave the table hungry!

The banquet menu came with a wide variety of dishes, portion sizes were large and literally every dish was delicious (sauce game is on point!). The food itself would easily warrant 5/5, but the service needed a lot of fine tuning...
- They brought out dessert while we were still awaiting another starter (??)
- When we told them, they brought out mains. And we had to remind then again about our last ...read more
We had a lovely spur of the moment meal here last weekend. So fresh, and all washed down with Vietnamese beers. The chicken curry was excellent, and barramundi too. The interior is clean and fresh and our waiter was delightful. It's got a fun buzz and there's lots to be said for that. Swift service, this time we sat inside so we could watch the chef.
All good here.
We have been to Mama's Buoi in Surry Hills and enjoyed the food and the experience. This time we visited their Crows nest location. Mama's Buoi is a restaurant serving modern Vietnamese cuisine. They do traditional Viet home cooking with a modern twist. The service is fast and friendly and have a good drinks list with alot of nice cocktails.
The food is delicious a little pricier than your Teaditional Vietnamese restaurants. However Mama's buoi is a little more refined and the modern twist to the these meals is worth the extra ...read more
I've eaten here many times, it's only been open for about 18 months. Charming decor makes you feel as though you are in Vietnam ( thanks for the free holiday, I've never actually been there ). Service is friendly enough, i think it's not easy for staff, the kitchen looks pretty small. Food is great . Only negative is don't take your 70 year old mum or granny here if they have mobility issues, the seating on the footpath is on a slope and the stools are not great for elderly folk, as they are not supportive, no back rest and too low to the ground.
