Seems like every day the major Supermarkets, like Woolworths Safeway and Coles are getting worse and worse, buying minimum from our own farmers and paying them minimal price for quality produce. Then they go and buy most of their stock from cheap imports of low quality, from countries with third world standards, but we still pay top dollar. There continually breaching laws, you dont have to spend much time surfing the net to find that out, and just look at the long string of offences they have been found guilty of. For instance theyll sell you meat, fish, as one thing but its something else. Old meat is splashed with sulphur dioxide to make it look fresh; you often find products still on the shelf past its use by date, fruit and vegetables that has had all the goodness and flavour frozen out of them, the list goes on and on. So how do they get away with repeating these offences time and time again? Because its profitable, its like for every $100 the supermarkets make ...read more
If you refuse to comply with the conditions of entry, then they can refuse you service. I'm surprised it took the store six months to stop serving you. Shame on you for taking your little power game out on cashiers trying to earn a buck through their schooling or tertiary studies. Cashiers of stores which have bag check policies are not trying to criminalize or create injustices for you or anyone else. They are merely attempting to pacify stock shrinkage and to prevent losses.
I hope by now you've stopped being that 'one bad customer' who ruins the day of countless hard working individuals in retail.
If you truly were not happy with the service and policies of the supermarket there are other ways of getting your point across without intimidating the staff. Jump on the other side of the counter for a minute and see how it feels, these people are only trying to earn a dollar and do as they are instructed.
Similarly, I was in Safeway Deer Park (which is where I do my normal Shopping, but, this was on a Saturday, so they must have had different Staff at the time), and refused to let them check my back-pack....
The staff pointed out the Sign, to which I said, "That doesn't mean anything", and the staff actually said, "I could lose my Job"
When I still refused, I heard the staff say, "Bite me"
Hmmmm....
I'm thinking that the staff will lose its Job quicker with its Attitude rather than my non-complience to a non-existant 'Law'
First of all, thank you for your comments. What power game, there is no power game, i think you're missing the point a little bit here. How do you know bag checks are to stop stock shrinkage and losses, not once have they ever given me a reason for wanting to look in my bag. They have security cameras in every isle, plus they have store detectives roaming around the place, so i can see no reason for a bag search. And my exercise is not targeted towards cashiers, what would be the point in that. There not the ones that draw up the company policies. They have just put themselves in the line of fire, and if a simple no is going to ruin their whole day, then perhaps they shouldn't venture outside their own front door. Either that or get a job elsewhere. Sorry to dash your hope, i have not stopped standing up for injustice.
Missmercy, again the whole exercise is not targeted towards cashiers, so if they feel intimidated for doing their job, then that is their problem, not mine. You say there are other ways of getting my point across, i am very open to suggestions and would love to hear them. I would like the opportunity to be on the other side of the counter, I am sure that would give me a different perspective indeed. But if i was, and someone said no to me, i imagine it would be like water on a ducks back. After all, i still get paid, which is the bottom line for been there in the first place.
Phil, good on you for standing up for yourself. I know exactly what their argument was towards you, I've heard it many times. They always point towards that sign, as if it's gospel. And as for losing her job because of your decision, i'm glad you saw through that one. A company cannot sack someone for something outside of their control. Even if that did happen, and the staff member took action for unfair dismissal, i would be more than happy to support that staff member. But because of that staff members comment towards you, i wouldn't bother.
