Sorrento Portsea RSL
Family Welfare OrgainsationsSorrento Portsea RSL subbranch was formed in 1920 by local servicemen who served in WW1 (1914-1918). The first Anzac day service was held by the subbranch in that year at the newly erected cenotaph on the Sorrento foreshore, beside Port Phillip Bay.
Sorrento Portsea RSL subbranch is therefore one of the oldest subbranches in Victoria.
Since its inauguration it has served the local community well. Every year on Anzac and Remembrance Days club volunteers conduct commemorative services to honour those who have served in our armed services in all conflicts from WW1 and WW2 to today's conflict in Afghanistan.
Sorrento Portsea subbranch went on to win 4 consecutive annual awards for having the largest percentage increase in membership in our category in Victoria.
We are now one of the most successful medium sized subbranches in Victoria.
Today we are approaching 600 members and have plans to increase to 1000 within the next 4 years. Memberships are vital to our ongoing viability and new members are made very welcome.
In mid 2009 we were fortunate to welcome Sorrento Thai Restaurant & Takeaway to our club. Over five years proprietors Samorn and Thai established a great Thai food restaurant in our function room which served the subbranch well.
In mid 2014 we were fortunate to gain the services of Jeab and Clint Dickson who through lots of hard work and dedication have established Sorrento Thai Restaurant & Takeaway as the place to go in Sorrento for a great meal at a reasonable price.
The restaurant is open for dinner & takeaway 7 nights a week in Summer and 6 nights a week for the rest of the year.
We are a not for profit organisation and all funds are used for building maintenance and Veterans Welfare. Sadly we are frequently called upon to conduct RSLfuneral services for deceased service members. Our club facilities are available at no cost for funeral wakes and family functions of all ...read more
