I little over an hours drive from Melbourne will get you to historical Ballarat and its main draw card these days, Sovereign Hill. As mentioned, Sovereign Hill is an open museum depicting what life was like for people living and working in a mining town during the 1850-1860s. I recently brought a friend from Korea here and she had a ball. There are heaps of activities you can do ranging from mine tours, gold pour, bowling and panning for gold to name a few. Being an outdoor museum, make sure you're dressed for nature's finest. Unfortunately, the mobility impaired may fine it difficult to navigate around the town due to the dirt road and board walks.
An open air museum depicting the gold rush era where visitors are transported to the history and able to get a realistic feel of the mid-late 1800. Friendly staff, gorgeous costumes, buildings and props. Educational, beautiful shops, pleasant atmosphere. A number of different workshops available (check the website), there are school holidays event. Staying overnight offered a greater experience I have heard. With a lot to do and see, the ticket price covers for a 2-consecutive days entry. One of the must see places in Victoria.
