Cabaret, Cocktails and ComedyThe Butterfly Club is a small theatre in Carson Place - home of Melbourne cabaret, cocktails, comedy, and a huge collection of kitsch art. Open six days a week year-round, The Butterfly Club presents anywhere between two and five different shows every night.
Whether you're looking for cabaret, comedy, burlesque, or a good ole' fashioned play, chances are there's one on this week. When I moved to Melbourne from NY, the only thing I bemoaned was the lack of cabaret culture here in Aus. Well The Butterfly Club has truly knocked that on the head. With a constant parade of new and known talent performing nightly, there's always something wonderful - or just plain weird - to go and see. The show room is tiny and they cram more people in than most venues two or three times the size. So you have to love intimacy to enjoy seeing someone do their stuff this up-close and in-your-face. But what a delightful contrast to big, impersonal venues and performances. Some of the shows you'll love, some you'll probably hate (they do push the envelope). But you'll never find another place like it. And even if you don't go for a show, the absurdly kitsch and curio-packed bars and lounges are worth a visit. (The cocktails are good too!). Set your fun dial to high as you enter this tiny, Victorian shop front complete with intimate cabaret lounge, flashy kitch dcor including an amazing doll collection, fairy lights, nannas plastic roses plenty of mirrors for preening and cruising and a maze of doorways and staircases where one can stumble upon three bars for that perfect cocktail. Fun, a little camp but plenty of smiles all round.
