The number eight symbolises luck and wealth to the Chinese, so expect to find it woven into the carpet, twisted into screens, and repeated in the menu and phone number of this barn-like 750-seater. With the kitchen serving so many people, it’s probably best to throw any expectation of pacing to the wind, and prepare for a dish deluge. Whilst the XO chilli sauce on a plate of Pipis in XO Sauce ($48/kg) was a little insipid, the pipis themselves were plump and fresh. Despite seafood being the specialty, my highlight was the superbly tender hunks of Wok-Seared Beef Fillet with Foie Gras Paste ($32.80). This dish was incredibly delicious. I could not stop eating it. You’ll also find dishes from Shanghai, like a reasonably gentle plate of Salted Egg-Yolk Prawns ($34.80).
A Chinese banquet at The Eight will delight the senses as you journey through traditional Cantonese cuisine. A trio of yum cha delicacies (har gow, siu mai and vegetarian dumplings) was a delicious but unexpected start to our feast as yum cha is not traditionally served at dinner. This was followed by Peking duck pancakes, San Choy Bow, stir fried fish fillet with vegetables, beef fillet with black pepper sauce, sweet and sour king prawns, chilli chicken, mushrooms with bok choy and their signature fried rice with prawns, fish roe and broccoli stalks.
If you're an adventurous eater, or a lover of spice, I'd recommend the chilli chicken. Prepared with a mix of Sichuan pepper and dried chillies, it's a mouth-numbing experience that will have you going back for more.
Get a group of six together to enjoy the award winning celebration banquet menu which includes eight dishes and a complimentary bottle of Moët for just $50 per person!
Came here one night for a big event and it's a good spot for a big group or function. There's a decent spare you can hire out for an event and the banquet options are pretty good with a mix of staples and more interesting dishes. Keen to come back and try the yum cha sometime because I hear it's popular!
Scrumptious yum cha feast is what you'll expect here. There is a great variety in food, pretty good atmosphere, not overly expensive either. It's one of the better chinese restaurants in the city and therefore very popular so try to avoid the peak hours if you're really hungry.
