Tim Ho Wan at Westfield Sydney has finally opened, but the long awaited store opened with anti-climactic arrival. Taking a shape of a takeaway shop with only seven small tables and accompanying chairs to quick-eat your orders, this place has a very limited food range, even less than its flagship store back at Chatswood Interchange.
The pork bun was already pre-prepared so there was no wait, but at the price they are on, I was surprised that they had the courage to play around with the sizes. They were a lot smaller than the ones I have repeatedly had in the other store and they were a lot less overwhelming.
There is also a sign that you would need to clean after your table, so there is definitely hardly any service here. There is also a surcharge of 2% if you pay with EFTPOS unless you purchase more than $20.
What a joke. I paid $6 for a small cup of mango pomelo sago which turned out to be a cup of watered down mango juice with a few tiny shreds of pomelo, and appallingly, even less sago which is a cheap ingredient.
I also ordered the BBQ pork buns. They are decent, but nothing to rave on about. The pastry is very sweet - like a dessert, but the filling is reasonably tasty.
I've been to the Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong which I thought was decent but not great. This one was just outright disappointing. Go around the corner to Palace or Sky Phoenix for your yum cha fix.
I love yum cha food and more importantly good quality yum cha food, and that's the reputation Tim Ho Wan has. Although the prices are considerably high and it'll never compare to the Hong Kong shop, it's not bad. Their bbq prok buns are the signature item and it's great to know I can just buy a pack of 3 to takeaway and enjoy at my work desk!
