Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy in which a person uses art to explore and express their thoughts, feelings and beliefs with the guidance of a qualified Art Therapist.
The goal of art therapy is to facilitate a person to tap into inner resources and express themselves visually instead of being reliant on using words. An image can express so much more than words. Art therapy also allows people to gently get to the core of issues by accessing the unconscious material that is influencing their everyday behaviour.
Anyone can do art therapy. You do not have to be artistically gifted. You do not even necessarily have to have 'problems' or a mental illness, perhaps you just want to explore who you really are. Perhaps it is a gift to yourself. Some time to just be you and to find out what that means.
Our aim is to create a safe, non-judgmental space where you can be guided on an inner soul journey through art. We may approach your art with a respectful curiosity in order to help you tease out thoughts and feelings arising for you after creating a certain piece of art.
Our name, Discover Yourself Therapies actually explains our approach to therapy, which is to empower and allow you to discover for yourself your own answers which lie within. Our therapists are merely gentle catalysts and supports for this natural and personal process of discovering yourself.
We are also flexible in that we approach the art-making when and if you are ready to try it. It is okay to just talk if that is what you want to do. Or even just dip your toe into a little bit of art and see how it feels to cover a page with pastel or get paint on your hands. The timing of the process is up to you.
We hope to join you on your journey of discovering yourself. We are here when you are ready to begin.
