Living near Newcastle harbour inspired Gwendolin to paint the coal ships and the ever changing scenes around Newcastle's working harbor and windswept beaches. Having lived near the sea for the past 40 years and growing up in an isolated country landscape, both of these environments have had a strong influence on her art.
Gwendolin has taught painting in regional galleries throughout Sydney, Newcastle and Maitland over the past ten years, as well as currently teaching private classes and giving workshops to groups. I currently work at my private studio in Mayfield, a suburb of Newcastle, NSW.
She studied at Swinburne College of Graphic Art and Design (Melbourne) in the 1960s and began a career in the Graphic Art industry in Melbourne where she learnt to paint and design according to the needs of the client.
After working in the Graphic Art industry for 10 years she went on to study painting at Tafe in Warrnambool in the 80s, and by the mid 1990s, had moved to the North coast of NSW and started her own business in architectural drawing.
It was about this time she returned to drawing and painting.
Gwendolin completed a degree in Fine Art, majoring in painting at Newcastle University graduating in 2001.
Her techniques and subject matter can be quite diverse which reflects the eclectic early training, there being a distinctive style woven into the painted and drawn images.
Her favourite painting mediums are Oils and Soft Pastels. Subjects include Maritime scenes, Landscapes and Seascapes.
Commissions and classes on request.
