McKay Architects
Robin McKay OAM, NSW Architects Registration No. 2238
The practice was established by Robin McKay in Penrith NSW in July 1969.
Close attention is given to the needs and aspirations of the user-groups and the critical importance of project budget limits from the outset. Together with creative, sensitive and ecologically responsible design and thorough documentation, that all generally results in user-friendly buildings and contented occupants in a quality environment.
Since 1969 more than 1700 projects covering most building types have been completed, with values up to $7,000,000.
Works have included the headquarters building at the time for the University of Western Sydney and campus headquarters on two other UWS campuses, and faculty and Students Union facilities on four UWS campuses.
The practice undertook the whole development of the Westmead campus, which included sympathetic refurbishment and extension of the historic buildings and provision of new major buildings. Other works have included the headquarters of the Penrith Lakes Authority, suburban and country shopping centres, some with Coles Supermarkets, master planning and major works at St. Paul's Grammar School Penrith and Blue Mountains Grammar School, churches, community, institutional and health childcare facilities, industrial, commercial, and hospitality projects, and a wide range of individual and multi-unit residential projects.
Awards for works have not been sought but nevertheless several have been bestowed, including those by the Master Builders Association, the Daily Telegraph, manufacturers, and Councils for institutional, residential and commercial projects.
On Australia Day 2009 Robin McKay was awarded the Order of Australia Medal for, among other things, his significant contributions to the architecture of the Nepean area.
