It has been proven that inhaling loose asbestos fibres is directly linked to a number of serious respiratory diseases including lung cancer, asbestosis, pleurisy and mesothelioma. The slightest exposure to asbestos can cause any of these illnesses but long term exposure may not result in the presentation of an asbestos related disease.
Carcinogens have been identified as the leading cause of a number of illnesses, including cancer. Asbestos is a carcinogen that can result in the following asbestos related diseases (ARD):
- Lung Cancer
- Asbestosis
- Mesothelioma
- Pleural Disease.
It is important to understand that even the shortest exposure to the hazardous material can result in disease. On the other hand, long term exposure may not result in the contraction of an ARD.
There are two types of asbestos that may need to be removed:
1. Bonded Asbestos
Materials that are bonded have a low percentage of asbestos fibres that are fixed in hardened cement. This means that their are no loose fibres minimizing the risk of inhalation. However, as previously stated, damage to the material can lead to fibres being released in which case the asbestos needs to be safely disposed of.
2. Loosely Bound Asbestos
These types of materials are usually found in industrial or commercial properties and are rare in household insulation, fireproofing or soundproofing materials. Loosely bonded asbestos needs to be removed immediately.
