Formerly the Tomas Dietz Flamenco Academy, The Flamenco Centre is Canberras pioneer of excellence in this field and has been teaching Canberrans since 1992. Tomas Dietz is a professionally qualified teacher with international accreditation, and has committed his life and expertise to maintaining the highest standards of teaching in this art form in Australia.
Now permanently based at the Belconnen Arts Centre, The Flamenco Centre provides training for all levels including new beginners. All our classes are open to men and women, and because flamenco is a solo dance form, no partner is required.
Entry level classes are suitable for everyone, whether or not you have any dance experience. Relax in the knowledge that you will be given the right tools and shown clearly how to use them correctly from the very beginning.
Starting at the grass roots level you will learn fundamental flamenco techniques, including: specialised arm and hand work (particular styles for men and women are clearly differentiated); percussive footwork; hand clapping, rhythm and structure; posture and torso work; turns; skirt work for women; coordination and balance; aesthetics of movement; and stage craft. These concepts are applied in a simple, attainable
performance dance that you will learn within a term.
Castanets are taught in more advanced classes as part of arm work.
Regular weekly revision and practice of classroom material is strongly encouraged to ensure your success and progress at The Flamenco Centre.
