What is Teeth Whitening?
The teeth whitening procedure uses oxidizing agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide to lighten the shade of the teeth. The oxidizing agent penetrates the porosities in the rod-like crystal structure of enamel and oxidizes interprismatic stain deposits. Over a period of time, the dentin layer, lying underneath the enamel, is also whitened.
Is it Safe?
Researchers from the World Leading Eastman Institute for Oral Health, (part of the University of Rochester Medical Center) set out to learn if there are negative effects on the tooth from using whitening products. They compared the effects of professional strength Hydrogen Peroxide to acidic fruit juices. They came to the following conclusion: that compared to Orange Juice "The orange juice decreased enamel hardness by 84 percent." No significant change in hardness or surface enamel was found from whitening. (Eastman Institute for Oral Health is a world leader in research and post-doctoral education in general and pediatric dentistry, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, and oral surgery).
Dental Work:
Tooth Whitening gel will only whiten natural teeth. It will not whiten nor harm bonding, caps, crowns, bridges, fillings nor any other artificial dental work. Tetracycline (an antibiotic) stained teeth or greyish teeth are more difficult to bleach and have a varied prognosis.
