From a young age, Andrew was interested in plants. His parents gave him a plot of land that was his to maintain, where he grew plants from pieces and cuttings. He started his first mowing job on 2 acres in Ringwood north at the age of 11. By 15 he had completed his first landscape using roses and conifers all edged with bricks. At 16 he was asked to install his first irrigation system where he obtained a plan and advice from a local supplier as to how to do it. At 17 he began his apprenticeship with the city of Melbourne where he gained experience in the maintenance and care of established gardens and the creation of new ones.
His experience while at the city of Melbourne included special event indoor and outdoor floral displays, turf cricket pitch and oval preparation, time working in the botanical gardens and government house, Fitzroy nursery growing display stock for the conservatory. He achieved apprentice of the year several times. He completed his apprenticeship and continued to work with the city of Melbourne as a manager of their 65 acre advanced tree farm. Complete with 20,000 potted plants and 20,000 in ground trees and a quarantine facility. One of his roles being to prepare the list of trees to be grown for the next four years.
