The State Library on Victoria is more than a library, although all the usual services are available.

You can spend hours in this magnificent building without picking up a book. Apart from the obvious services, the library houses a number of galleries displaying a range of treasures including texts, images and historical artefacts such as Ned Kelly’s armour, plus art and photographic exhibitions. But it’s the magnificent domed La Trobe Reading Room that most impresses first-time visitors. The recently renovated octagonal reading room houses the library’s Australian collection underneath the light-giving dome that was the largest in the world when completed in 1913.
