What is Aikido?
Aikido, the art of harmony, was developed between 1920 and 1960, by Morihei Ueshiba (1883 - 1969). He is known as Oâ??Sensei, or â??Great Teacherâ??. Aikido was O'sensei's life work; a journey that blended intense physical training, with deep philosophical and spiritual insights.
The breadth of Aikido practice is vast. Most people identify Aikido by its civilised system of self defence - where defensive technique is used to restrain and subdue - preserving both the defender and attacker.
On a deeper level - to practice Aikido is to study the natural flow of life. A persons body and mind begins to re-align with the gentle yet powerful rhythms of nature. One learns to deal with aggressive energy much like a surfer harnesses the energy of the sea - not through struggle but by blending with its power. Aikido practice allows a person to release stress, tension and fear by better understanding the dynamic interactions of life.
Through dedicated practice, one feels centred and grounded. The body becomes vital and strong. The mind clear.
