The juggling act of managing diabetes can be overwhelming, with family / work / financial & many other commitments, making it more difficult to follow some of the advice you may have been given - eating right, fitting in activity & taking medication - a balancing act so many find it impossible to achieve.
While I have coeliac disease, my husband has Type 1 Diabetes, managed with an Insulin Pump & Continuous Glucose Monitoring. Carbohydrate counting, insulin adjustment, blood glucose levels, the highs & lows & ongoing stress & emotions of living with diabetes is a part of our daily family life, promoting my personal insight, understanding & passion for diabetes self-management education. I'm here to help & provide support, no matter how difficult you find managing your diabetes.
From my experience, Diabetes Education should fit the individual's needs and not one approach fits all. Many of the changes I may advise are very simple and can reap rapid rewards in how well you feel, which can enlighten your outlook & give you hope for the future.
Many of my Type 2 patients have achieved such good diabetes control in just a few months, such that they no longer need to do regular finger prick blood tests. Others have come to me needing insulin to treat their diabetes, yet have been able to adopt some of the nutrition/ lifestyle changes I have advised, such that insulin injections are no longer required and significant weight loss has been achieved. I realise this is not always possible, but depends on the individual's pancreatic function.
Many individuals with Type 2 Diabetes, may have been told that it is a progressive disease that will inevitably lead to the need for insulin. I do not believe this is the case at all. My own experience, on review of the research, has led me to firmly believe that the correct early management can in many cases prevent the disease from progressing
