Zen is a spotlessly clean, airy venue with big windows to Magill Rd giving plenty of natural light. A white and blue colour scheme is offset by apricot tablecloths and napkins, with unusual slices of Chinese art done in slabs of render over otherwise exposed painted brick. You walk into the split-level dining area from the rear car park and take-away area where big tanks hold barramundi, Murray cod, crayfish and an eel. The service is swift and efficient making it a good venue to take the whole family. The choices are exotic, such as the jellyfish with golden mushrooms, deep-fried crab claw and spicy Kong Po chicken done in hoi sin sauce with bamboo, onions and cashews. The special roast duck comes in a cane duck-shaped dish, the marinated small pieces reconstructed. Tables of people of Chinese background dine here proving the old line that if the Chinese eat in a place it must be good.
