An exhaust system is a unit that is placed on a vehicle to ensure that exhaust fumes are safely dispensed at the rear of the vehicle. Given that exhaust fumes are toxic, if they were to escape in a vehicle while it was operating, it could result in medical damage or even death to the passengers. That being said, exhaust systems carry the fumes to the rear of the vehicle, at which point they�¿re allowed to escape and dissipate into the environment.
Mufflers are an important part of the exhaust system. The primary purpose of the muffler is to quite, or muffle, the exhaust escaping. As exhaust is released at times under high pressures (during acceleration), the noise resulting can be very loud, and otherwise annoying. Mufflers help to dissipate the exhaust prior to it escaping, thus quieting the process.
Some muffler units, however, are made to actually do the opposite, and make the escape louder. This is generally for show purposes, and is used in things such as race cars or classic cars.
