A senior fertility specialist and gynaecologist with IVFAustralia, Professor William Ledger moved to Sydney from the United Kingdom in early 2011. Prof. Ledger is Head and Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at The Royal Hospital for Women and Head of the Discipline of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the University of New South Wales.
While in the UK he was described by 'The Observer' newspaper as 'The friendly face of IVF', and he is known for his approachability as well as his clinical prowess.
Internationally renowned, Prof. Ledger's research interests include all aspects of assisted reproduction, particularly 'Mild' IVF, and gynaecological disorders including endometriosis, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and premature menopause.
Before moving to Sydney in 2011, his contributions to clinical practice and research in infertility made him one of the most highly profiled Professors in the UK and Europe. Prof. Ledger was a member of the UK Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority, the Government regulator of fertility medicine in the UK, for five years, with responsibility for decision making on scientific and ethical issues in assisted reproduction. His thought leadership in Europe has made a major impact on treatment guidelines, and he also has a special interest in improving access to treatment and funding.
Prof. Ledger and his family first experienced our sunny shores 20 years ago when he was working as a Senior Registrar in Adelaide, where their third son was born. Their love for Australia prompted their return after he spent the last decade as Professor and Head of Department in Sheffield.
With 125 refereed papers to his name, and as the joint author of 15 books and over 50 book chapters and publications, Prof. Ledger is IVFAustralia's most widely published fertility specialist and described by patients and colleagues alike as both a humble and caring specialist.
