Dr Kariyawasam is a consultant gastroenterologist and hepatologist who will be consulting at the Pennant Hills Day Endoscopy Centre and Macquarie university Hospital from July 2013. He has admission rights to Macquarie University Hospital and will be performing endoscopic procedures at Pennant Hills Day Endoscopy Centre and at Macquarie University Hospital.
Dr Kariyawasam brings expertise in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and advanced therapeutic endoscopy (gastroscopy, colonoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound). However, his practice encompasses all aspects of gastroenterology and liver disease â?? including colorectal cancer prevention (including removal of large polyps from the colon via colonoscopy), irritable bowel syndrome Barrettâ??s esophagus, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and viral hepatitis.
After completing his gastroenterology training at Gosford, Westmead and Concord Hospitals, Dr Kariyawasam obtained his fellowship of the Royal Australian College of Physicians (FRACP) in 2011. He then completed an endoscopic fellowship at Concord Hospital and embarked on a clinical research fellowship in IBD at the world-renowned IBD center at Guyâ??s and St Thomasâ??s Hospitals in the UK. He also obtained the member of the Royal College of Physicians UK (MRCP) in 2011. He is bilingual (English and Singhalese).
Currently enrolled in a clinical PhD, Dr Kariyawasam is looking at long-term outcome and impact of thiopurines therapy in the treatment of IBD. He is published widely and actively involved in teaching novel research. Dr Kariyawasam is a member of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia, the American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy, and the European Crohnâ??s and Colitis Organisation.
