Sport for Jove Theatre is an award winning, NSW-based repertory theatre company producing a major touring summer festival of outdoor Shakespeare in Australia, along with theatrical and education-based seasons of classical and new works in Sydney theatre venues. The company also provides an interactive Education program to NSW schools.
Sport for Jove Theatre Company is determined to establish an original, compelling and energetic new theatrical voice in Australia, one that is committed to nurturing and challenging young artists - actors, directors, playwrights, designers and technicians and consistently pushing new boundaries in the production of classical theatre in Australia - from Greeks to Shakespeare and modern classics.
Sport For Jove Theatre Company offers 3 distinct programs, an annual Outdoor Shakespeare Festival, an indoor theatre season and an education program for NSW students.
The annual Outdoor Shakespeare Festival is the heart and origins of the company. It was started in 2009 by Damien Ryan, Artistic Director of Sport For Jove who lives in the Western Sydney area and wanted to see more high quality productions brought out West. Staging two classical works outdoors each season, the festival has grown to involve stops at Bella Vista Farm in Baulkham Hills, Everglades Garden in Leura and the Norman Lindsay Gallery in Faulconbridge.
As the company grew, and demand for their product increased, Sport For Jove started programming an indoor season at Parramatta and the Seymour Centre, producing large scale productions of Shakespeare and non Shakespearen works.
Arts education though remains a main objective of the company; and Sport For Jove annually creates an informative HSC based season of educational theatre shows, workshops and symposiums, in-school residency programs and after school training programs to further the development of thousands of New South Wales students in the areas of drama and arts appreciation.
