Founded in 2002, Red Stitch Actors Theatre has built a reputation as one of Australia's leading independent theatre companies by virtue of both its sheer work ethic and critically acclaimed productions of new, fresh, and predominantly unseen work from overseas - staging Australian premieres from writers such as Edward Albee, Paula Vogel, Mark O'Rowe, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Neil LaBute, Richard Bean, Martin Crimp and Austin Pendleton. Red Stitch produces high quality, unique and often unseen material that audiences might otherwise never get the opportunity to experience.
Red Stitch represents a new generation of talented Australian theatre makers whose commitment to the power of live performance and exciting, Australian premiere productions will continue to enjoy growing audience support and acclaim. With a newly renovated and attractive inner city venue in one of Melbourne's most vital arts precincts, Red Stitch is now a widely recognised cultural hub that fosters artistic development and broadens audience expectations and enjoyment of contemporary theatre.
Red Stitch received the Fringe Festival performance award in 2002 and since 2003 have received many Green Room Awards including 'Significant Contribution to Independent/Fringe Theatre'. Since 2004, Red Stitch ensemble members have been nominated each year in the Best Male/Female Actor categories. The Green Room Awards Association receently placed Red Stitch in the 'Companies' category alongside State Theatre funded companies MTC and Malthouse, winning Best Direction (Denis Moore, Harvest) and Best Production (Harvest) categories in 2007.
The company is managed by a core group of 15 professional actors, designers and technicians who wish to expand expectations of theatre by championing new and exciting, truly contemporary work and setting standards of excellence in its performance.
