Over the past 15 years, Getaway Trekking & Adventures has established a reputation for leading culturally and ecologically sensitive treks in many destinations. Our vast experience in trekking, combined with our knowledge of local culture has contributed to us becoming a leader in the trekking area.
Although we have taken many adventurous souls to various destinations around the world, our principal destination remains the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea. For many Australians, Kokoda is an iconic trek, and represents a growing appreciation of the bravery and sacrifice of our young diggers during the Papuan Campaign.
Our philosophy towards our national porters, or carriers, sets us apart from many other trekking companies. Having spent many years developing relationships with our carriers, we value their friendship, and the lessons they continue to teach us, on and off the track.
The privilege of operating a trekking business in PNG brings with it a social responsibility towards these wonderful people. We contribute on a regular basis to the schools and communities along the track. In particular we support the village of Buna on the north coast. Though the story of the Kokoda Track is becoming more well known, it is still a little known fact that Buna in Oro Province was the scene of some of the most ferocious fighting in PNG during WW2.
A good deal of our business over recent years has resulted from referrals from others who admire these philosophies and principles. For many, trekking the Kokoda Trail has proven to be a life changing experience.
At the conclusion of many of our treks, you may choose to have some rest & recuperation (R & R) time with our national friends on the northern beaches ? a reward for your hard work on the track!
