Do I need to have done yoga before?
Absolutely not. Classes cater for all levels of ability. There are lots of options for beginners, intermediate and advanced levels.
What if I can't do a pose very well?
That is great. These asanas or poses are usually the greatest teachers! Some bodies simply can't get into certain positions for a variety of reasons that vary from the way your muscular-skeletal system is, to previous injuries you may have had. There are always alternatives. The most important thing is that there should never be pain in yoga. So please let me know if anything is very uncomfortable or painful and I'll give you an alternative.
How is a class structured?
Generally, in Classical yoga we begin with a 10 minute savasana. This is the pose that a lot of schools do at the end. We start with this to help bring you into the current moment; too shed all that has come before so that you can maximize the experience of the class. This is then followed by a warm up and then into the asana or poses that form the bulk of the class. In the last fifteen to twenty minutes we do pranayama or breathing and meditation. Classes are generally themed, but I may throw all that out the window if I get a feeling that the class needs something else.
