Allansford Cheese World
I'd driven past this place many a time on my way along the Great Ocean Road, however I have never been all that interested in stopping off to check it out (though most of the time that I end up passing the place it is generally closed). However, when I recently spent Easter in Warrnambool I decided to go and check it out with my friend. Basically it is a factory outlet for the cheese factory across the road, though it stocks a lot of other produce from the local area. As well as various cheese and dairy products you can also get wine (and what would cheese be without a bottle of wine?) and they have some pretty awesome icecream available as well. Out the back is a museum, but it isn't a cheese museum, it's just a museum full of antiques from a nearby farm (which disappointed me a little because I was actually expecting a full blown cheese museum).
Ever been driving a long previously untraveled road in what seems to be the middle of nowhere, with family speculating, in the back seat of the car, over how long they have left before they die of starvation? When, low and behold, what appears to be a roadside diner saves the day, their bellies and your sanity? This is the scenario that introduced my family to 'Allansford Cheese World'. Now, I'll start by saying here that I have heard people complain that Cheese World is "all about cheese tasting and sales, and not a world of cheese at all" - and will admit to a degree of bemusement at such statements. So yes folks, you heard the official confirmation here first - Cheese World is NOT a literal world of cheese!! Now that we have that mix-up sorted, we can get to the good stuff ...
