i normally read but don't comment, but was gobsmacked by some of these reviews... by far the BEST service in darlinghurst, we are always made to feel more like guests than customers, and AMAZING brekkie menu, so diverse, fresh and delicious, especially compared to everywhere else on the street!

On more than one occasion (and the last time will be the last time as I won't come back here now) I've stood waiting to place a takeaway order while service staff continue to complete whatever they're doing without even so much as acknowledging you until THEY are ready.

I tried once to raise this as an issue to one server who informed me curtly that "I'm busy right now". Sure, fair enough, a coffee shop should be a bustling busy hive of caffeine fuelled hum. I counted 3 patrons downstairs. There were 2 staff behind the counter (1 barista, 1 serving), and I could hear someone back in the kitchen. I visited Alma a few weeks ago on a Sunday after seeing an exhibition at the museum. Dcor is very quirky and eclectic- menus are pasted into old magazines, a hand painted mural covers one wall, fake vines cover the ceiling and much more! There is an upstairs balcony like seating area overlooking Stanley Street which is quite nice and airy. To be honest the upstairs area was a bit smelly and there were lots of flies buzzing around but it was pleasant enough. Unfortunately the service was not the best. After waiting for a while we ended up going downstairs and placing our order. Had we not we might still have been waiting. This was a bit disappointing given there were only a few tables filled when we were there. At this stage we were feeling a bit dubious and thinking we may have been better off going to the pub next door. We were however very happy with our food when it arrived. Do not waste your time by coming here. Food is very ordinary and expensive. We waited over 1.5 hours for what was effectively eggs on toast. No apology from the management, who only explained they had a backlog in the kitchen and that because they were full we should have expected to wait (although we were sitting outside and couldn't have been expected to know what was going on upstairs). Appalling attitude. Definitely give it a miss there are much better alternatives in the area.

Alma promises a Portuguese deli, but delivers mediocre coffee and average cafe food. Where is the Portuguese deli? That could actually be nice.
