Ambassadors Hotel
Unfortunately one of my go to pub lunch spots has gone downhill. The balcony dining room isn't open every day and if you go on a day that it's closed you need to eat in the Marble Bar which is a small bar at the back of the hotel with a limited menu. The food was really average - the burger was overpriced for what arrived, as was the garfish. The $10 lunch special was also pretty uninspiring.
I used to come here every Friday night after work to have drinks with work colleagues, but ended up going off and doing other things because, well, it wasn't that great a bar, and we had also ended up growing apart. However I decided to pay it a visit on my recent trip to Adelaide and I have to say that it has changed a lot. First of all there is this beer garden out the back, though it is basically an alley way with a few decorations thrown around it (and some fake grass on the ground). However further back is this really, really cool bar. Mind you, back in the day I've been to this place a lot, including having birthday lunches on the upper levels. I still remember that this was one of the go to places when I was a young adult. However it died, but from what I have seen recently, it is definitely going through a resurrection. Oh, I also love the paintings that dot the place.
I revisited recently and was pleased to see that it was still busy at lunch. It was a sunny afternoon so the balcony was the place to be and it was really pleasant. I felt like a salad but am always a bit dubious about "pub salads" - I went with the Moroccan lamb salad anyway and was not disappointed - a generous serve with a good mix of baby spinach, lamb, capsicum, tomato and cous cous. The schnitzel that arrived at our table was good and the burger had an obviously homemade patty that tasted great - but just needed the burger staples of bacon and egg to perfect it.
