Annalakshmi is a non for profit Indian buffet restaurant. You pay what you like for the food you eat. The place is run by volunteers and all money goes towards feeding the homeless.
We went on a Friday night and the line was out the door. It is not like a traditional buffet, but more like a cafeteria. As you walk along, the volunteers put the different foods onto your plate, then you can help yourself to tea or juice. It was so busy, I didn't really set the opportunity for anyone to go up for seconds, but they really do fill up your plate the first time.
There is no set seating, so you can sit where ever you like.
I would like to come back here again at lunch to see if the food and atmosphere is any different.
Really like the concept. The food was better than average, although it is buffet style, simple fare with a feel of Hari Krishna for those that have eaten that food. It probably is a bit less flavoursome than Godiva if you're looking for a comparison. I wasn't a fan of their version of dahl, but really appreciated trying food from a different area of India.
Despite the food being worth maybe 3 to 3.5 stars, I give it a higher score for the feel of the place; it was nice and warm inside (despite being cold out), beautiful view off the jetty, nice staff, it was clean. I went on a Sunday evening and there may have been a couple of students/backpackers, but I also saw families and a lot of well presented adults on an evening out. Of course, the rating is based on the expectations - it's not a four star rating if you are expecting table service, or a restaurant (in the true sense of the word)-quality experience.
I love this place!! who cares if it is full of backpackers, its good food with some flavour, something Perth restaurants tends to lack!!
the decor is cute and authentic, the views outside are lovely and you can relax and know what your eating is freshly made!!
so yes I highly recommend this place! and yes get there as it opens to ensure you get to taste everything on offer!!
Quite the concept..."pay as you feel" I for one was quite sceptic over the idea as to what clientelle one may receieve however quite enjoyed my experience there. Clearly run by family and friends I was greeted at the door by a mother and little girl who was so happy to draw me a picture to take home. The food was pleasant and what you would expect from a vegetarian style indian food. Dont be afraid to ask what is what as labels are not present. Beautiful surroundings of the city lights and south perth across the river...
