A unique coastal hideaway offering modern accommodation

Rick Stein, who has the famous Seafood Restaurant in the Cornish fishing village of Padstow is bringing his recipes, and seafood knowledge to Mollymook to make use of the fabulous fish and shellfish to be found in the waters south of Sydney.

Bannisters, the hotel and much praised restaurant on the South Coast at Mollymook will feature many of the dishes that work so well over in Padstow but will also pay tribute to local ideas on the best ways with a fillet of flathead, a plate of pippies or platter of local oysters and prawns.

The menu will be almost entirely fish based though there will be a vegetarian and meat lover’s option every day. The wine list will concentrate on great fish wines but there will always be one or two dishes that would be well accompanied by a light fresh red like a Tasmanian Pinot.


You know you’re onto a good thing on a road trip when you hit a sign sporting a huge image of an azure-blue infinity pool surrounded by cushioned sunloungers. The tagline: you are one hour from Bannisters. Just the sort of encouragement you need to make your road trip to Mollymook (around three hours drive from Sydney) that much quicker. And here it is, a quick sixty minutes later, Bannisters. A ‘60s motel converted into a swanky resort and spa, known for its poolside pizza and cocktails. Our recommendation: the syrupy red fruity cocktail with muddled strawberries, cranberry juice and just a hint of mint.This cliff-top hideaway has a beautiful day spa with breathtaking views of the coral sea and the rolling surf on Narrawallee Beach from its cabana relaxation area. "There's plenty of people who want to be out here," our waitperson says, as we apologise for the trouble of relocating our table indoors when the late summer sun made lunchtime dining unpleasantly warm. Once ensconced in our new digs, we enquire after our wine, missing in action for at least twenty minutes. When it finally arrives, our super-heated wineglasses struggle to do justice to the 2014 Jamsheed ‘Harem Le Blanc Plonk’ ($58). They usher this blend of Upper Goulburn and Grampians Riesling quickly past fresh ginger and kaffir lime, and straight towards funkiness and sweet. Around me, the open-plan restaurant oozes casual coastal luxury, with a slight Mediterranean twist. We had a nice lunch at Rick Stein's restaurant at Bannisters in Mollymook a few weeks ago. The setting is just lovely, with tables on the balcony under cover with views out onto the ocean over the bluff, where you can hear the waves crash into the cliff face below. The staff were some of the most attentive, courteous, knowledgeable and pleasant that we've had at a restaurant for a long time, which was very nice. The menu covers mainly seafood (as you might expect!), but offers a few other options including steak. We chose a few starters which were reasonably priced, and were delicious -- the sashimi taster and prawns on ice, presented beautifully. The mains were less impressive, however -- we chose the steamed John Dory which came with a salad which was overpoweringly salty, and a fish pie which included scallops, prawns, salmon and white fish in a bland cheese sauce, for $45. Nevertheless, the meals were still enjoyable, and we might visit again.

We all had high expectations for our Easter long weekend, we had planned for a group of us to enjoy the views, cocktails and pizzas one night around the pool.

Tip for large groups: From our experience, try somewhere else. As once we arrived we were escorted out the back, to a room which was less than exciting. The reasoning for our last minute relocation was because 'we couldn't get table service out near the pool area' - this didn't bother us, but then we found out it was because due to the pool area being part of the accommodation facilities, large groups result in loud noises and would disrupt those guests. Just came back from the most amazing weekend there with my boyfriend! The rooms have breathtaking views, we spent all day saturday by the pool, drinking wine and beer and soaking up the sun. The rooms are beautiful with big plasma's TV and complementary dvds. The restaurant IS OVERPRICED so eat at the pizza bar instead - $15 pizza's, much better value.
