Bar H Dining

Matching the best of seasonal produce with wine

The H in Bar H stands for Hamish, who spent nine years under the guidance of Kylie Kwong before branching out with this Surry Hills eatery.

With his partner Rebecca, the pair have created a European style bar where coffee, wine and modern Australian cuisine is on offer. The slick interior is chic and pleasing to the eye, and you can enjoy a tipple or a meal in comfort and style.

Review to win entry OVER 8 years AGO

I had walked past this place and barely noticed it until I was invited there and felt ashamed for overlooking it all those times I walked past with my head down. It is a really sleek and refined interior, very understated and classic but it feels special when you walk in. We did the tasting menu with the wine pairing and it was so varied, each dish was a welcomed suprise. We got a lot of Japanese inspired Australian cuisine, like more of a fusion restaurant but the emphasis was on the produce and matching it with subtle Asian flavourings. On top of that the wine pairings, including cider and sake, went perfectly with the food. The whole tasting experience was really fun and you could tell that a lot of thought had gone into the whole production. I would love to go back here again and experience the whole thing all over, it really was great.

Hiding away from the main street, this cute little bar is perfect for a group outing. A cozy little space, there is seating around the bar, where you can watch the cehfs in action, or relax on tables, enjoying the service brought to you by friendly waiters. The menu is designed to share, but go in open minded as the mix of Australian ingredients with Asian fusion is not for everyone. A place the is calling for multiple visits, the food is delicious and will leave you feeling very satisfied.
Nomad's Thoughts: The menu boasts a range of dishes that should be tried, including the Japanese Fried Chicken or the Crisp Saltbush. Come with a large apetite so no item is missed and relax in the cosy atmosphere. The waiters, while friendly, do not have the standard of service that would be expected in a place like this. Looking forward to trying here again, but not high on the priority list.

Early dinner last Saturday - brilliant. Two Negronis (with a splash of sake), fried fish skin (much better than it sounds), sublime clams and prawns, chicken liver and heart karaage (with chicken skin and olive) and seriously good sprouts. Atmospheric, smart, unobtrusive service, reasonably priced...just very, very good #reviewtowin

Went here on a recommendation and were lucky enough to get vouchers for a 7 course degustation. On arrival we were asked whether we wanted to sit at the bar or at the window. We missed out on the last corner seat facing out into the street, but managed to get a spot by the door. I'd read other reviews about customers feeling ripped off for being 'shafted' to this area, but it was a relatively mild night so it didn't matter too much. Hubby ended up being the door-man as people didn't quite know how to shut the door! Anyway, the courses came out and we were a bit doubtful about whether we'd be making a through a Maccas drive-through or not. Starters were pretty light on: cucumber & black fungi salad and steamed pork & prawn wontons (we only got two, hence the nervous scepticism). The beef short ribs on sesame leaves were san choy bow like and went down well with the house beer. The deep fried tofu and spatchcock were served with a modest amount ...read more
