Baroque Bistro
Vive la Renaissance! The Charkos family has been providing Sydney with sweet treats at La Renaissance patisserie. Baroque is the new place: heritage meets
modern in the heart of The Rocks and the very-French feel and jazz tones suit the name. To start: pumpkin and poached egg salad with crostini that pierces the egg so it becomes an instant delicious runny salad dressing. Duck three ways with orange is a huge hit, not to mention the decadent cassoulet. Raspberry soufflé is sweet, as are the trés bon macaroons.
I didn't fully know what to expect when I booked here. I hoped for decent quality standard-range French food. But every step further into our evening unveiled another aspect to prove that they are so much more than standard. Not only can't I fault Baroque, but I think that they have set a new standard for any other restaurant that I go to in their price range. On that note, they aren't cheap, but nor are they charging fine-dining prices - I was impressed at how reasonable the bill was.
I especially appreciated their efforts to accommodate our sleeping baby, when their focus is justifiably not a demographic for children.
The desserts are out of this world too.
My wife found this restaurant online and for how it presented, we booked. Having gotten there on a cold and windy Saturday night, we were welcomed warmly and taken to our table set especially as we had our baby with us too.
I loved the place from top to tail. I would normally have given it a full complement of 5 star ratings, but my wife said that two very minor things were not perfect in her eyes. She prefers more modern designs to interiors instead or the wonderful eclectic feel that Baroque provides. And the food was fabulous, but did leave the smallest room for improvement. I would not hesitate one second to return here though. ...read more
