Adrian and Natasha have been breeding Cherax destructor, the yabby, at their home in South Australia for more than two years. What began as a pet in a tank, eventually turned into a mini aquaculture system in their garage. The idea emerged to start growing out all the baby yabbies to table size and supplying local restaurants. Due to the success of the hatchery, Adrian and Natasha soon had more small yabbies than they planned to keep for grow out. It was then that they discovered that yabbies were an excellent live bait for recreational fishing. Research shows that yabbies are hardy and can survive being delivered as a live product. Adrian and Natasha now supply their surplus stock under 5cm as bait to Murray Bridge and the surrounding areas. Blue Gourmet is a sustainable, environmentally friendly business run by a dedicated family.
