A cosy place with friendly service from the owner to staff. The menu is very extensive with distinct Middle Eastern influences and dishes present. Everything is homemade, from the falafels to the dips to the baklava. And everything is flavourful, delicious and generous. Its also very affordable and reasonably priced. The shakshuka is not the biggest but big in flavour. Same goes with foule - a mushy, slow cooked Middle Eastern lentil dish. The hummus is delicious as are the crunchy spicy falafels. Specials like lentil soup is a warm hug on a cold day & you cant go wrong with a bacon and egg roll on Turkish or a tasty wrap. The baklava is not too sweet which is great but abit skint on the nuts. The hot chocolate is delicious and not short on chocolate with 2 big clouds of marshmallows. Its just a relaxed, homely, deliciously comforting place to enjoy good dood.
Came by chance,it's a interesting location not located on the main strip but only a few minutes walk and it gets a few customers. There is a outdoor ish area which looks cozy but we are inside.
You order at the counter and we had the lamb salad bowl and corn fritters
My missus said the lamb bowl and she said it was just alright
Having corn fritters recently I didn't find this experience as good as my previous but my missus disagrees
My missus said it right that the tomato relish is a good combination with the corn fritters
I found the filling more loose and crumbly
Food came out at a reasonable rate and service is friendly
I feel like I could come back in the future
CAFE ON JOHNSTON is much more than you would imagine on paper or from the outside. Its Middle Eastern influences in the cafe food are a marvel and something I look forward to return to. Especially for more of that Fattoush Salad – simply divine.
Full review is now up at Spooning Australia.
The cafe is inside a house and you can sit inside or in the laneway next door. It was quite busy this Sunday visit, papers for you to browse and a kids play area if you want to take the family.
Order at the counter, they have some meals on display to inspire your order! There's a range of
house specials - moorish made baked beans, corn fritters, home made pancakes. There's also heaps of wraps, sandwiches, burgers and bruschettas. ...read more
Cafe on Johnston is a very nice breakfast/brunch spot in Annandale. A cafe serving a very large menu which is inspired by all the traditional brunch/lunch options as well as some very nice middle eastern touches.
I had the haloumi stack for breakfast which was a nice alternating stack of well cooked haloumi, tomato, avocado and a perfectly poached egg. This was a special at the time, but I hope it makes it into the regular menu as it was a great breakfast - very filling without being heavy. The coffee is beautiful - having a strong, yet not overpowering taste. What I loved though were the juices on offer here - the lemon and mint juice was absolutely the kick to start the day that I needed. ...read more
