Looking for budget accommodation that ticks all the boxes without colouring outside the lines? The Canberra Carotel is the place to stay. Located in Watson, in the city's northern outskirts, the Carotel has motel rooms and cabins, plus facilities for caravans, tents and campervans. Reception doubles as a convenience store (including liquor!) and I was charmed to discover the proprietors display information on bus times and weather as well as the usual tourist brochures. Rooms are basic but superbly so - clean, well-maintained and adequately equipped, including an oven, stove, microwave, fridge, freezer, digital TV, heating and air conditioning (all of which worked perfectly and intuitively). The room we stayed in had a double bed and single bed, plus two very comfy sofas, adequately housing five of us. All linen and towels were clean, the bathroom was great and the hot water didn't run out regardless of my marathon showers. The Carotel's location offers ...read more
