Interventional Cardiologist at Townsville Cardiovascular AssociatesDr Adam Cannon is the founding partner of Townsville Cardiovascular Associates. He graduated MBBS from Flinders University of South Australia in 1982. He then trained in Internal Medicine at the Flinders Medical Centre in Adelaide, before completing Cardiology training at Sydney's Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Halstrom Institute of Cardiology.
Dr. Cannon subsequently undertook a two year fellowship in Interventional Cardiology at the University of Alabama Medical Centre in Birmingham, Alabama, where he then worked on the Faculty as an Assistant Professor of Medicine and Interventional Cardiologist. Here, he was closely involved in the development of the Gianturco-Roubin stent, as the University was the Principal Investigative site. This was the first FDA approved Intracoronary stent released in the USA in 1992. He subsequently served on the USA and International Training Panel.
In November 1993, he returned to Australia as the Director of Cardiology and Interventional Cardiologist at The Townsville General Hospital. Here he developed the inaugural Cardiac Catheterisation Laboratory and Interventional Cardiology service. He was also involved closely with the development of the Adult Cardiac Surgical service. He commenced private practice in 1998 and has worked at the Mater Private Hospital since that time. He holds a VMO appointment at The Townsville Hospital and is an Honorary Associate Professor of Medicine at the James Cook University Medical School.
Dr. Cannon holds fellowships with the Royal Australian College of Physicians, the American College of Cardiology and the Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand.
Dr. Cannon practices general cardiology with a major interest in Interventional Cardiology, particularly Coronary Angioplasty, stenting and Renal Denervation therapy.
