Chamberlain Hotel
The Chamberlain Hotel in Sydney's CBD is a sophisticated, boutique pub which offers scrumptious cocktails, modern Australian cuisine for lunch and dinner, and fun events.
I've been here a few times, including quite a few years ago and it has certainly changed, but then again this part of Sydney is known as Thai Town. The last time I was in Sydney I came here for a meal, and I note that as well as the Thai menu they still offered traditional pub grub, which was pretty cool. I ended up having the steak, which they did pretty nicely, and my brother had the chicken (and he never complains when it comes to chicken). It's probably not the best but that I've visited, but they do have a nice range of beers on tap and the prices aren't all that bad. I haven't tried the Thai menu though, but that's more because I prefer to have Thai at a Thai restaurant. For some reason I tend to prefer pub grub when it comes to pubs. As I said though, decent place for a beer, or a feed, but not the best.
Dropped in here for a quick drink before a show at the Capitol Theatre. Its got a nice funky feel about it, and we liked the style of the bar with drink and meal prices easy to read on the wall behind. On the negative side there was only one person serving even with the theatre crowd pouring in and the tables were a bit grubby. Also the bar smelt a bit of wet carpet. Anyway we took a seat near an open window so the smell didn't bother us, and sipped a few very pleasant Chardonnays.
Also disappointing for us was all the signs advertising free stuff on different days. Manicures, 3 minute massages, prawns, oysters, music... every day except Sunday. Guess which day we were there :(
But I have to say what a great idea! I wish more pubs would think outside the box like this. Seriously if our local did manicures and massages, my husband I would so drink there. Sadly our local just offers pokies and the odd brawl, not nearly as refined.
Pub is good. Food is excellent. From $9 steaks to the $32 tasting plate which is fresh and fantastic. They have Thursday night Martinis and Manicures for the girls, Wednesday night is free prawns for everyone with massive platters coming out and Oysters for all on Friday.
They used to have a promo called " Bring a ranga" which I think has finished now but if you took 4 mates and a red hed you got a $50 bar voucher. I invited Julia G. The hotel is big on gaming and the service in the gaming room is up there with the best. Nice staff and friendly management. I pop in here weekly for a beer.
