I've been observing Cockatoo Island during my many trips probably thousands of times from Manly to Circular Quay and back again. The island fascinates me with the old stone and corrugated iron buildings, sandstone walls, convict style prison environment that allows my mind to wander back into those days when Australia had convicts. For those that have been there, don't you agree you get this tingle feeling through your chest when you put yourself back into the century that this was a thriving overcrowded jungle of human beings, prison officers, the type of food slop that they were probably given by us Australians. And today it is our heritage, where we have created an opportunity for artists, designers, tours in architecture and engineering. Looking at this environment against the backdrop of glass sky rises and the huge steel structure of the coat-hanger that links the rocks environment now gives us strength, happiness and sadness too, that we can ...read more
The rugged slate of canvas that is Cockatoo Island has an energy that’s unique to such an iconic piece of Sydney history. Mixing industry with creativity, the island has been home to convicts and shipbuilders alike, but these days it’s a space for artists, day-trippers and urban campers. However, if you’re after some indulgence, the newly opened Garden Apartments are the best place to rest your head for a night (or two). Situated on the upper plateau of the island, you’ll have view across Sydney Harbour to Woolwich and Hunters Hill. Once housing the Island’s medical officers and police, these two bedroom apartments have been given a luxury makeover, with a modern kitchen, spacious bathroom, large entertaining area with BBQ (make sure you pick up a brekky pack) and bedrooms with views of the city skyline. If you can pry yourself away from the apartment, a guided audio tour is a great way to while away the afternoon, where you can hear about the island’s rich ...read more
Wonderful spot for a day out in Sydney. Catch the ferry over, wander around the site, hopefully pick a day when there's some event or exhibition on. They are one of the main venues for Biennale so definitely worth a visit when that's on, but no need to wait till then.
Went to the Underbelly Arts festival here and it was pretty cool! A nice experience to catch a ferry in too. The island has an industrial feel which adds to any kind of exhibitions held here. We enjoyed coming but the only thing is if the food that you like gets sold out, you're kind of stuck with the other choices or.. To go back.
