David's Restaurant
To eat like the locals in Shanghai, you have to be a local. You have to know which crooked alleyway to walk down and which riverside home cooks the best congee. Similarly, in Prahran, the streets are heaving with hustle and bustle. But down quite, one-way Cecil Place, you can forget the noise and city lights while feasting at an established hidden gem, the same way you can lose yourself sitting beside the water in the Chinese countryside, munching on prawns from the morning?s catch.
Traditional Shanghai/Chinese style cuisine. wonderfully refurbished restaurant that has won many awards including the age good food guide "chef hat" 7 yrs running.

Here for the unlimited weekend Yum Cha. Drinks are extra. Amazing service as previous times. No trolleys and no ordering required. Staff brought out a variety of Dim Sum and we choose what we want. A large number of dumplings and deep fried foods. Unfortunately, there are not enough vegetables nor non-dumplings items so it got a bit dry and heavy. Desserts were more of the sweet dumplings and fried sweets. It would be nice if there are the puddings, sago and other soup desserts.
Went here on a date and was really impressed with the food, service and interiors of David's. It's the kind of place you want to move right into - it's that beautiful. The food was well priced and varied, the staff were really knowledgable and accommodating to food allergies.
Tucked away from Chapel St this place still had a great hum to it without being over crowded. Will definitely be back - overall great dining experience.
A popular Chinese restaurant even on weeknights. It is not a budget restaurant but surprisingly well priced. The 4 of us had a few entrees, vegetables mains, tea and dessert which left us a little too full and went home with a truly well packaged, complete with safety instructions doggy bag. Unlike most other Chinese restaurants, the food are not salty- they are just right.
Menus are not too extensive but excellent varieties, unusual interesting combinations.
Lovely ambience, excellent, friendly and prompt service without being overwhelming.
Saw the unlimited yum cha on Sat and Sun. Prices has slightly increased since the previous reviews but it is always best to ring and check. There are also local night and another special night.
David's Restaurant serves Yum Cha all-you-can-eat for $35. I found the Yum Cha truly delicious with a great variety of dishes to choose from. Service is friendly and prompt but you don't feel rushed the way you do sometimes at Yum Cha. I usually don't bother with the desserts but I actually enjoyed the banana fritter.
Big call but Davids Restaurant has revolutionalized the yum-cha experience. Family and I tried the all-you-can-eat yum cha on a Saturday ($35 pp). Even Mother, who prefers 'traditional' over anything 'modern' or fusion, raved about the yum cha.
The interior of the restaurant is fresh and modern. The table was set with all the cutlery, bowls, cups and condiments that one could possibly need during the meal. Service was exceptional. Dishes were brought out at a good pace on trays. I appreciated the careful explanation for each dish. There was none of the abruptness I have come to expect from yum cha trolley madams. The atmosphere had a refined air of calmness, rather than noise and busyness. ...read more
