Dench Bakers

This is a local favourite. Miss matched chairs and wobbly tables with seating inside and out. It is very 'north side'. The food and the atmosphere is laid back. I'm a huge fan of the corn fritters, but there is often new specials which is also worth trying.

Dench Bakery is renowned for it's baked goodies and artisan breads. They also do fantastic coffees and breakfasts. I found the food to be just ok compared to the other brunch spots in the area. They are always really busy here given that it is in the heart of Fitzroy North and I found the waiter to be a tad rude / impatient. The portobello mushrooms on toast was quite tasty and the serving size was decent. The setting is quite cozy/usual hispster as it features local artwork, white walls and old chairs. I'd still come back here for their bread and hot cross buns during easter.

You know when you have a food revelation? Well I have one of them every time I eat something from Dench whether it's pastry or bread or breakfast. OMG! Yum! There know how to do pastries here and the coffee is real good. Be prepared to wait though. They kinda don't hurry here and sometimes you feel like you are supposed to be privileged to be waited on ( occasional attitude) but you know what - it's worth the wait and worth the up and down service. Don't try the bacon and egg in pastry if you don;t wanna be heading back every week.
