Its been awhile since i've eaten in Footscray and it's been awhile since i've eaten Bun Bo Hue. Of course it has to be Dong Ba as it's their specialty. I work in the CBD and a colleague of mine was craving for Bun Bo Hue (BBH) so we caught the train to Footscray to have a nice hot meal. Weather was perfect for it, it was a bit cold and chilli so the soup warmed us up straight away. Quickly and speedy service. Very busy during the weekday lunch time. We had to share a table with others. Dong Ba also offer other dishes in their menu such as rice and other noodles but looking around everyone was there for the BBH. You can hear the slurping which is a satisfaction indication for the owners knowing that they are always delivering to expectation. Their chilli oil to go with the soup is different from other stores which does make it also unique. $10 for a medium bowl, i was so full walking out because i cleaned up my bowl with not a single drop of soup left. When i feel like Bun Bo Hue, Dong Ba is the only place i go. As mentioned by previous review, i agree that its been around for a very long time. Has looked the same, never needed an uplift or change to the restaurant since i've been eating here as its name itself is well known for Bun Bo Hue. The spiciness of this noodle is just so yummy, writing this review right now has made me crave for a bowl. Always remember to squeeze lemon to make it a bit tangy aswell. I have eaten other Bun Bo Hue and by far Dong Ba has topped it each time and always satisfied my cravings. Service is quick so never need to wait too long if you are hungry.
This restaurant has been around for a very long time. Believe its been the same owner, the restaurant itself has remained the same in tables, chairs, interior designs. Unlike the restaurant across the road and nearby, in which we have seen numerous renovation over the recent years to provide a fresh new image. Like the other reviewers, they make very good bun bo hue, bun rieu and bun mang vit. They are all traditional Vietnamese broth soup all offering a unique and different flavor. They also offer a number of different dishes on the menu, however the above they prepare very well. Those living in this area and have eaten at the number of Vietnamese restaurant would know very quickly which restaurant specializes in what dish and who prepares them better than others. Late Friday/Saturday nights in which the restaurants along this street is the busiest, they are often not as busy or popular more or less due to the recent trend with other restaurants and many ...read more
This place is known for its spicy beef noodles, Bun Bo Hue (BBH). If you're familiar with pho, BBH is it's baulchy cousin. It is another beef rice noodle soup with spicy, lemon grass aromatic flavours that comes from Hue, Vietnam. The BBH here is fresh and comes out quickly and tastes mighty authentic. My friend ordered the pho, but it wasn't as good as other places in Footscray. The service can be a bit brisque, but heh, it's really about the BBH right? Definitely worth a try.
If you're after a quality bowl of spicy beef noodle (Bun Bo Hue) then this is the place to get it in Footscray. They specialise in this particular dish and do an exceptional job at it. The service here is fast, you'll be seated immediately and if ordering their main dish, it comes out fairly quick. Customer service however isn't that great, and neither is the overall cleanliness but the quality of the spicy beef noodle soup definitely makes up for it.
