Dr John Van Essen

Specialising in sports injury (including arthroscopic and ACL surgery), joint replacement and revision (arthroplasty) of the knee and hip.

Born and educated in Adelaide, Dr van Essen also completed his orthopaedic training in Adelaide, before undertaking further training in knee and hip surgery completing a Fellowship in knee arthroscopy and revision arthroplasty, in Exeter, UK and a Fellowship in knee and hip arthroplasty, in Toronto, Canada further fellowship training in arthroscopic and sports surgery, Ontario, Canada.

Dr van Essen was awarded the J & J Joint Replacement Fellowship (Harvard), S & N Fellowship in Adult Reconstructive Surgery (London, Canada) and the Zimmer travelling fellowship, taking him to Canada, USA, UK, Norway and Belgium where he furthered his training in knee and hip surgery.

Dr van Essen is involved in research on knee and hip surgery outcomes with a special interest in implant biomechanics. He is the former Head of Unit and current Head of Arthroplasty Services at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital (CAHLN). He has previously served as a committee member for the SA Brach of Australian Orthopaedic Association. He is also a Clinical Lecturer at the University of Adelaide and Flinders University.
